Why Families Should Review Their Estate Plan Every Few Years

Life changes faster than we realize. One minute you're choosing a guardian for your toddler, and the next minute you're helping your teenager learn to drive. One minute you're buying your first home, and years later you're thinking about retirement, downsizing, or helping your children become independent.

Your estate plan should keep up with those changes.

Many families create an estate plan during a major life event and then forget about it. But reviewing your plan every few years can help make sure it still reflects your wishes.

Here are some good reasons to revisit your plan:

✅ Your children have grown older.

✅ Your chosen guardians or decision-makers are no longer the best fit.

✅ You bought or sold property.

✅ Your family situation changed.

✅ Your financial goals have changed.

✅ You want to update beneficiaries.

A review doesn't always mean you need to completely redo everything. Sometimes a simple update can make sure your documents still accomplish what you intended. We often see families who have adult children, but their will still has a relative or friend as the child's guardian if they pass away. We also see trusts with old houses listed or with executors that are no longer with us, which wouldn't be very helpful if you needed someone to manage it.

The best estate plan is not the one you created ten years ago.

It's the one that reflects your family today.

As summer winds down and families prepare for a new school year, it's a great reminder to check in on the plans that protect the people you love.

When was the last time your estate plan had a "check-up"?
