Two Families in Portland, One Had a Will and One Had Nothing

THE SMITHS

The Smiths came to Affordable Estate Planning after the death of the matriarch of the family. She had a home, RV, some money in a bank account and no will.

The first thing that had to be done was to open probate. The woman’s three adult children had been close for years, the celebrated events and holidays together. But, when their mother passed they all handled it different ways. One wanted control of everything, another was still grieving, and the third threw themselves into work.

When probate opened, control of the house and possessions became a battle ground. Each family member was forced to get an attorney as they fought for possession of the home, RV, and personal items that had significant meaning for me.

It wasn’t just costly, it was permanently damaging to the family.

THE JOHNSONS

When the Johnsons sat down with Affordable Estate Planning, they created a comprehensive plan for the house, bank accounts, and other assets.

A year later the matriarch of the family passed, but everything was clear: who inherited the house, how the bank accounts were divided, and who would manage any leftover tasks.

No confusion. No tension. Just the family honoring her wishes and moving forward together. The family bonded over this experience and helped each other grieve.
