Pride in Lake Oswego, Oregon

We love supporting our community, and part of that is hosting booths at local markets to answer estate planning questions while offering fun activities for families.

We attend markets throughout the summer and into the fall. You can find us in West Linn, Lake Oswego, Sellwood, Multnomah Village, Woodstock, and even as far north as Sauvie Island.

Every market is special, but Pride in Lake Oswego is particularly near and dear to our heart. Not only is Pride LO a party, it's also a great opportunity to help the LGBTQIA+ community with questions that are specific to their needs. Things that other attorneys don't often talk about.

We had a family from the area ask us about trust when one of them was trans. This is a particularly important topic right now given the changing federal laws. We talked with them about the need to remain ambiguous with the pronouns or just use their legal name to ensure that there was nothing in the trust that could allow it to be discredited or contested. They felt much better knowing that there were options to ensure that their estate would be protected and that their children would not have to worry about probate if something were to happen to them.

This isn't the only issue that the queer community has to worry about. Oregon is a wonderful place to live with communities that support all lifestyles, but non-traditional families can still face attacks from relatives, hospital staff, insurers, and more. Having proper documentation can make all the difference. If you would like a partner to make financial or medical decisions for you, the best option is having a Durable Power of Attorney, Medical Directive, and HIPAA Authorization that gives you the power to dictate who is in charge of your wellbeing and needs if the worst were to happen.

We had a blast at Pride. We handed out crowns, decorated pins, and best of all were able to help dozens of families with questions that had been weighing on them.
